Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

The life expectancy or longevity of people around the world has improved gradually because of breakthroughs in medical science.

However, new statistics show that our age may well depend on the locations we live in.

According to the United Nations, Swaziland in Africa has the lowest life expectancy at birth – 39.6 years.

But longevity is not only determined by country’s locations, but also regional variations within a small country.

Statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK have revealed that average life expectancy has risen in the UK but that it differs in the North and the South.

The statistics also shows that women’s life expectancy is higher that men.

In the programme, BBC correspondent, Emma Jane Kirby, explains why living to a ripe old age in Britain depends on which part of the UK people were born in.

How surprised are you by the differences in life expectancy in the UK? And what do you think helps improve our longevity?
