Over the centuries, the feeling that a daughter is inferior to a son has prevailed in some countries and cultures.

During Pre-Islamic times, historians describe the burial of daughters alive and in some parts of India and other countries this is still practiced.

However even though this is an extreme example, there are other ways in which some men show their displeasure towards newly born daughters such as naming the daughter ‘Nakhusha’ which means ‘unwanted’.

It might be less violent than taking her life but it is still something that shows how disappointed and upset these parents are at not having a son.

Now in parts of India there are ceremonies where groups of girls named ‘Nakusha’ are celebrating an official ceremony in which they are given new names, names which thay have chosen themselves.

It’s hoped these ceremonies will help to address the issue of discrimination against girls.

Why do you think that some parents still feel sons are superior to daughters? Do you think it is just the father or might the mother also think that? How are daughters seen in your country?
