A US company and the Colombian government are embroiled in a dispute over the ownership of a cache of sunken treasure.
Gold, silver and emeralds worth billions of dollars are thought to be on board the wreck of the San Jose – a Spanish galleon which sank off Colombia’s coast in 1708 while trying to outrun a fleet of British warships.
It was reportedly found in 1981 and a private salvage company cut a deal with Colombia to claim most of what was brought to the surface. But the contract was never signed – and then the arguments began.
The Columbian government reneged on their deal to split the treasure by cutting the company’s share to just 5% even though Colombian courts said the booty should be split fifty-fifty.
Now a US federal judge has ruled the company can’t claim breach of contract as no contract was signed.
The result of all this means that for the time being at least, the treasure remains at the bottom of the sea.
